About CSE Intelligence

CSE Intelligence is Sri Lanka's first quantitative sentiment gauge for the Colombo Stock Exchange, built by InwestOut and DamithInvest. It tracks daily news sentiment across thousands of Sri Lankan financial news articles to generate a forward-looking signal for the ASPI — the All Share Price Index.

The platform aggregates news from EconomyNext, Daily FT, and other major Sri Lankan financial publications. Each article is scored using natural language processing to determine whether the market sentiment is bullish, neutral, or bearish. These scores are aggregated into a daily signal and tracked against the ASPI closing price to measure predictive correlation.

How the Market Signal Works

The Tomorrow Signal uses a regularized (Ridge) linear regression model — trained via walk-forward backtesting on today's sentiment, the 3-day average, momentum, article volume, and high-signal article count — to generate a next-day ASPI forecast. This is an experimental signal and should not be used as the sole basis for any investment decision.

The 90-Day Structural Signal reflects the medium-term market sentiment trend, aggregating sentiment scores across all qualifying articles in the rolling 90-day window. A positive score indicates improving sentiment across the Sri Lankan financial press.

The 12-Month Signal provides a long-term view using the full year's sentiment data. A score above zero indicates that news over the past 12 months has, on a confidence- and topic-weighted basis, skewed positive.

The SLEPU Index — Sri Lanka Economic Policy Uncertainty

The InwestOut SLEPU Index applies the Baker-Bloom-Davis Economic Policy Uncertainty methodology to Sri Lanka for the first time. It measures how often Sri Lankan financial news contains uncertainty-related language around economic policy, government decisions, monetary policy, and regulatory changes. A higher SLEPU reading means greater uncertainty in the policy environment — historically associated with increased market volatility.
